Taking part in an educational tour in Provence means diving into a region you think you know, then rediscovering it through the senses, through encounters, and through a gentler rhythm. As a travel advisor, I try as many experiences as possible so that I only propose what truly reflects the essence of slow tourism: taking time, tasting, observing, feeling. Between Aix-en-Provence, the mineral silhouette of Sainte-Victoire, and the perched villages of the Luberon, this immersion reminded me why this region remains an endless source of inspiration. The pale stone alleys, bustling markets, gravel crunching under bike tires, the scent of thyme and almond powder… everything converges toward an experience that is simple, genuine and profoundly Provençal.
Key experiences: gastronomy, nature and heritage
The adventure begins in Aix-en-Provence, in the vibrant heart of the market. The stalls overflow with asparagus, farm cheeses, and herbs that perfume the warm air. With Emmanuelle, founder of Leki Cuisine, we cook together using the ingredients selected at the market. The gestures are simple, the moment warm — a perfect immersion into how locals live and savor their region.
I continue with a gourmet walking tour led by Anouk, a wander where you stroll, taste, and let the city reveal itself one bite at a time. The crackle of puff pastry, the bitterness of new olive oil, the sweetness of a calisson melting slowly… Aix unveils another dimension when discovered this way.
In the afternoon, we head toward Sainte-Victoire. With Vincent from Aix Ebike & Guide, I hop on an electric bike and ride along the paths where Cézanne once set up his easel. The wind carries the dry scent of sun-warmed stone, the mountain is outlined against a deep blue sky. As I pedal, I hear stories of Zola, local anecdotes, and geological details only a passionate guide can share. This blend of soft adventure, culture and landscape perfectly reflects my vision of travel.
The day ends at AQUABELLA Hotel & Spa**, built over ancient Roman baths. Warm water, pale stone and the spa’s soft quietness offer the ideal break after a day outdoors. Earlier, I visited L’Escaletto, a hotel committed to exemplary environmental and social practices, even offering a complimentary drink to guests who opt out of daily cleaning — a clever, simple way to encourage awareness.
The next day, after this Aix-based immersion, I meet Lucie and Marion from À la Française Provence. We drive to Bonnieux, where Maxime from Sun E Bike equips us for our electric-bike exploration of the Luberon. The landscapes open gently: blooming cherry trees, rows of vines, villages clinging to the rock.
Each stop reveals a new facet of the region. In Lacoste, the story of the Marquis de Sade intertwines with that of the American art school that revitalized the village. In Oppède-le-Vieux, the morning mist wraps the stone walls in a medieval atmosphere. In Ménerbes, we enjoy lunch by the frog fountain, a simple and soothing pause: local dishes, the murmur of water, and that gratifying feeling of having earned the moment. The ride back to Bonnieux flows smoothly downhill, with the impression of cycling through a full-scale movie set.

A region perfectly aligned with the slow-travel philosophy
Provence naturally lends itself to slow travel. Short distances, daily markets, discreet villages, gentle cycling routes — everything encourages you to slow down. Engaged partners, responsible accommodations and thoughtfully designed itineraries further reinforce this coherence. As a travel professional, I seek authentic and sustainable experiences. Here, every moment resonates with that vision.
What I take away from this immersion
This educational tour reminded me that escape doesn’t depend on distance, but on the way you look at a place. Between home-style cooking, local stories, cycling among cherry trees, and sun-drenched alleys, I rediscovered a Provence that is sincere, gentle and inspiring. A parenthesis I’m already eager to share with future travelers.
