At France By Locals, we believe in celebrating achievements with experiences that truly embody our values: connection, authenticity, and adventure. So, when the time came for our quarterly reward, our team decided to swap the office for the outdoors and embark on a slow-travel adventure in one of southern France’s most breathtaking spots — the Calanque de Sormiou, just outside Marseille.
Our partner for the day? Activ Road, a dynamic and passionate local operator specializing in outdoor experiences across Provence. Together, we set off for the Luï d’Aï parcours, a unique and thrilling route that blends hiking, climbing, and abseiling in one of the most iconic coastal landscapes in France.
A New Way to Experience the Calanques
The Calanque de Sormiou is famous for its turquoise waters, steep limestone cliffs, and wild Mediterranean beauty. But this time, we didn’t just admire it from afar — we got up close, really close!
After a warm welcome and safety briefing from our Activ Road instructor, Sebastien, we geared up with harnesses, helmets, and ropes. The adventure began with a 20-minute approach hike, surrounded by pine-scented air and the soothing sound of cicadas. The first views of the Calanque below were already stunning — a natural amphitheater of rock and sea.
This was not your typical hike. The Luï d’Aï parcours is what locals call a “vertical hike”: a mix between rock climbing and hiking, where participants are roped together for safety as they navigate exposed, cliffside paths. It’s a playful, aerial, and immersive way to explore the Calanques — accessible even to beginners, but thrilling enough to keep your adrenaline flowing.

The Thrill of the Luï d’Aï Route
As we advanced along the trail, the landscape unfolded dramatically — white cliffs plunging into the azure sea, small boats anchored in hidden coves, and seagulls circling overhead.
Each step brought a new challenge: narrow ledges, rope crossings, and rocky passages that required teamwork and concentration. Guided by our instructor, we made our way toward the vire de la Tiragne, a remote ledge that few non-climbers ever reach.
For the most adventurous among us, the highlight was the 15-metre abseil — a controlled descent along a vertical wall that dropped directly toward the sea. Hearts raced, smiles widened, and shouts of excitement echoed against the cliffs. The feeling of hanging above the Mediterranean, suspended between sky and sea, was unforgettable.
And to top it all off? A refreshing “plouf” — a swim in the Calanque’s crystal-clear waters at the end of the route. The perfect way to cool down after an exhilarating outdoor activity.
Slow Travel, the France By Locals Way
This adventure reminded us of why slow travel lies at the heart of our philosophy at France By Locals, your trusted DMC in France. Slow travel isn’t just about taking your time — it’s about experiencing places through authentic, meaningful connections. It’s about meeting local experts, exploring hidden gems, and embracing nature’s rhythm rather than rushing from one landmark to another.
In Marseille and Provence, slow travel means discovering a different side of the region: beyond the busy Old Port and iconic bouillabaisse, there’s a world of raw landscapes, small villages, and passionate locals waiting to be discovered. Whether it’s hiking in the Calanques, cycling through the Luberon, or kayaking along the Côte Bleue, each activity offers a new way to feel France — not just see it.

A Well-Deserved Lunch in Saint-Anne
After our adventure in Sormiou, hunger hit — and rightly so! We made our way to the authentic neighborhood of Saint-Anne, one of Marseille’s best-kept secrets. Away from the touristy spots, this local district exudes charm with its narrow streets, small squares, and family-run restaurants.
We settled into a typical Provençal restaurant, where time seemed to slow down even more. Between laughter, shared stories, and delicious Mediterranean dishes, the afternoon turned into a celebration of everything we love: good food, good company, and the joy of discovering France through its local flavors.
A Reward to Remember
Our Luï d’Aï outdoor adventure with Activ Road wasn’t just a team activity — it was a journey of discovery and connection, both with nature and with each other. It reminded us that rewards don’t have to be extravagant to be meaningful. Sometimes, the greatest luxury is time spent outdoors, under the sun, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes and good friends.
We came back from Sormiou recharged, inspired, and more convinced than ever that slow travel is the best way to experience France. We’re excited to keep exploring — one adventure at a time.
