Can You Tell Us the Story of Le Moulin du Roc?
Le Moulin du Roc is, above all, a story of family heritage and transmission. Built in the 17th century, more precisely in 1670, it was originally a walnut oil and flour mill before later being converted into a turbine that supplied electricity to the village.
In 1969, Solange and Lucien Gardillou fell in love with the property and set out to give it a new purpose, transforming it first into a country inn and later into a charming hotel and restaurant. The mill and its restaurant, Ròda—meaning “the wheel” in Occitan—quickly became a gastronomic landmark thanks to Solange’s culinary talent. The property was awarded its first Michelin star in 1980, followed by a second in 1982.
Since 1995, their son Alain Gardillou has continued the family adventure with the same dedication and commitment to preserving the soul of the property while allowing it to evolve. To this day, Le Moulin du Roc remains deeply connected to its history.
More than a hotel, it is a character-filled house where heritage, hospitality, gastronomy, and nature all play a central role
What Makes Your Property and Guest Experience Unique?
Le Moulin du Roc stands out for its distinctive atmosphere, balancing elegance and simplicity. Nestled along the banks of the Dronne River and surrounded by a wooded park, it offers an exceptional natural setting that naturally encourages guests to slow down and reconnect with what truly matters.
As an independent hotel with the spirit of a family home, it offers understated luxury, far removed from the codes of ostentatious hospitality. Here, the experience is built around the beauty of the surroundings, the quality of personalized service, and a constant attention to detail, creating the feeling of being genuinely welcomed into a private home.
This philosophy is reflected in the highly personalized nature of each stay. A few days before arrival, the team reaches out to guests to anticipate their preferences—whether it be their favorite newspaper, a book waiting in their room, or a specific product or brand they enjoy. Every detail is carefully considered to create a stay tailored to each individual.
This close relationship is also built over time, as illustrated by the loyalty of guests who have been returning for more than thirty years and whose habits and preferences—such as their preferred breakfast—have remained unchanged throughout the years.
Each room has its own unique personality, while Ròda restaurant celebrates seasonal and local produce. A wide range of experiences allows guests to fully enjoy the estate, including rowing boat excursions, tennis, yoga, in-room massages, picnics, riverside moments, and quiet hours spent reading beneath the trees.
At Le Moulin du Roc, everything is designed to offer far more than a stay: a genuine timeless escape.

What Small Touches, Services, or Experiences Leave the Strongest Impression on Your Guests?
Often, it is the smallest details that create the most lasting memories.
Guests particularly enjoy simple yet memorable moments: a brunch or dinner on the terrace accompanied by the sound of flowing water, a boat ride along the Dronne, a local food discovery, an evening of music at sunset, or the release of biodegradable lanterns at dusk.
Guests travelling with dogs appreciate the thoughtful welcome designed specifically for their four-legged companions.
For families, we offer a treasure hunt across the estate, inviting children to discover the property through a series of puzzles before receiving a small surprise upon completion.
Children—and adults with a sense of wonder—can also meet Albane, the barn owl who serves as the guardian of the mill. Through stories imagined throughout the seasons, she invites guests to discover the world of Le Moulin du Roc from a different perspective.
Among the more original experiences available, guests can also borrow a watercolor painting kit and enjoy a creative moment in the gardens or by the river. It is a simple and calming activity that perfectly reflects the spirit of the property.
Beyond the services themselves, it is the sincerity of the welcome and the genuine care devoted to every stay that guests most frequently mention in their feedback.
